Nice Travel Information

An outstanding sunshine record. Tempting shops and boutiques. The sparkling blue Mediterranean. An intriguing mix of former Italian port and turn-of-the-century Belle Époque resort, Nice is more than just a beach holiday.

The city stretches along the Baie des Anges, where the Alps and the Paillon River meet the sea, protected by wooded hills and mountains. As the regional capital and the gateway to the beautiful Côte d’Azur, Nice is spitting distance from glamorous resorts like Cannes and Monaco, and within easy reach of the rural villages of Provence. Once the haunt of wealthy aristocrats, these days its population is wildly varied.

Shops and boutiques line the pedestrianised city centre and the winding alleys of the Old Town and by night Nice buzzes with lively pavement bars, restaurants and trinket stalls. It won’t take you long to get a feel for the layout. The Old Town gathers round the hill of Nice's former château, a pocket of narrow crammed streets centred on Place Rossetti and the Baroque Cathédrale St-Réparate. Nearby is the entrance to the Parc du Château, decked out in a mock-Grecian style harking back to the original Greek settlement of Nikea. Climb the hill to take in the spectacular view over the muddle of the Old Town's rooftops below. Or follow in your ancestors’ footsteps and amble along the Promenade des Anglais, originally laid out by 19th century English residents for their afternoon sea-breeze stroll.
